Trade balance of fresh vegetables and greens market in Magadan region
Vegetable growing has never been a strong side of the Magadan region, which is associated with climatic, geographical and economic characteristics of the region.
Too harsh and long winters, short vegetative period and regular natural disasters hinder successful cultivation of vegetables in the open air, the yields of which are difficult to predict.
Magadan's geographical proximity to China and the availability of relatively cheap Chinese vegetables and greenery have resulted in almost complete degradation of partially preserved local agricultural production. For the last 20 years the bulk of fresh vegetables have been delivered to Magadan by air from China or Moscow. As a result, the share of all types of fresh vegetables imported to Kolyma (except potatoes) and melons is more than 2/3 in the consumption structure, and the term "own production" includes vegetables grown by the population on their plots and for their own needs.
